E is for Enfield

Diana Beebe, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, MDDW, Diana Beebe's Blog, science fiction, fantasy, young adultThis heraldic beast has the the head of a fox (sometimes a wolf), the chest of a hound, eagle’s talons, a lion’s body, and a wolf’s hindquarters and tail.

az15_enfieldI love this description of it from mythicalcreatureslist.com:

“It was first noted to be used by O Cellaigh of Ireland but later became the emblem of the O’Kelly family. The beast made an actual appearance to the King Tadhg Mor Ua Cellaigh who died graciously fighting like a wolf dog in the fierce battle of Clontarf in 1014. He died fighting alongside the High King of Ireland Brian Boru. At the end of the battle, the Enfield was issued forth from the sea to come and protect the body of the King from robbers and wild animals until the Irish men came to give their king a true burial.”
