Ivan Bilibin’s Alkonost (circa 1905)

The Alkonost is a mythical Russian creature is a lot like the harpy with the body of a bird and the head of a woman.

She will sing all your troubles into nothingness–wipe your memories with her song so you remember nothing.

As a creature of the underworld, parenting isn’t her forte. She lays her eggs near the ocean and then rolls them into the water. The eggs hatch and create strong thunderstorms that makes the sea treacherous for travel. Is that because the eggs are really big or because the hatchlings are mad that they have to learn to swim the second they hatch?

A is also for AWESOME. I’m working on a post about my wonderful weekend at the California Dreamin’ Writers’ Conference where I accepted Third Place for the first three pages of my work-in-progress, GLOW! Like I said–awesome! I’ve got stories to tell, but the challenge sneaked up on me. 🙂

Do you have a favorite mythological creature that is a combination of more than one animal? Have you heard of the Alkonost?
