Ivan Bilibin’s Alkonost (circa 1905)

The Alkonost is a mythical Russian creature is a lot like the harpy with the body of a bird and the head of a woman.

She will sing all your troubles into nothingness–wipe your memories with her song so you remember nothing.

As a creature of the underworld, parenting isn’t her forte. She lays her eggs near the ocean and then rolls them into the water. The eggs hatch and create strong thunderstorms that makes the sea treacherous for travel. Is that because the eggs are really big or because the hatchlings are mad that they have to learn to swim the second they hatch?

A is also for AWESOME. I’m working on a post about my wonderful weekend at the California Dreamin’ Writers’ Conference where I accepted Third Place for the first three pages of my work-in-progress, GLOW! Like I said–awesome! I’ve got stories to tell, but the challenge sneaked up on me. πŸ™‚

Do you have a favorite mythological creature that is a combination of more than one animal? Have you heard of the Alkonost?

  1. Welcome and good luck to the A to Z challenge. This is my second time around, and my third challenge so I know that it can definitely be well, a challenge. I spent my first post talking about my top tips even.

    Good luck!

Thanks, Danielle! Good luck to you, too. I’ll take a look at your list. πŸ™‚

  2. I had never heard of an Alkonost before. I like her! I especially like that whole egg/thunderstorm thang. Congrats on the 3rd place win. You should be glowing! I’m looking forward to reading that post.
You’ve started out with a bang for A to Z! Cheers!

I am glowing! Thanks, Elen! Have fun with the challenge, too. See you over at your place! πŸ˜‰

  3. This is a new creature for me – how cool! I think I’ll have to go with centaurs, though, since I created what I think is a new twist on the beast for my own WIP. I hope my readers like my centaurs, too. πŸ™‚

    Congrats on the win!!

Centaurs are pretty fabulous! I’m intrigued about the twist you created for them. Can’t wait to read it!

And, thank you! The win was a highlight of the trip.

Myself I’m partial to Hodags, another mythical creature known to inhabit the northern regions of flyover country.
Congrats on the 3rd place. getting recognized by a jury must feel good!

I’ll have to investigate Hodags–it might just displace the current H creature on my list.

      Thanks, Jeff!

  5. Congratulations on your glowing WIP. I love mythical creatures and how they’re represented in art.
