In Search of the Perfect Pancake

Diana Beebe, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, MDDW, Diana Beebe's Blog, science fiction, fantasyThis week we all heard the sad news that Leonard Nimoy passed away. I’d already written this post, so I thought it could be a tribute to the man who has touched and influenced so many people.

Most people remember him most fondly as Spock on Star Trek, but I also remember him from the TV show “In Search of…” that he hosted. That show fueled my imagination for the unknown and science fiction and storytelling.

But we all know those stories were true, right? *wink wink*

I thought I’d do my own version of “In Search of…” Mermaids Don’t Do Windows style.

Welcome to the wonderful, weird, and unexplained.

The mysterious perfect stack of pancakes. That mouth-watering golden brown, evenly distributed color on both sides. The symmetrical roundness. The consistent 1/8-inch thickness. Fluffy, yet not cakey.

Some people have seen these perfect pancakes. Some have even made them. But where is the proof?

For most people (OK, me), creating this elusive perfection is just… out… of… reach.

Do they really exist? My family doesn’t think so!

We will explore the unknown world of pancakes in a way we have never experienced.

First, it’s all about the heat of the skillet. I’m stating the obvious here, but if it’s too hot, they burn. If not hot enough, they’re pale and not cooked through.

Observe the bubbles in the batter. Look for even spacing.

I content that the perfect pancake does not exist, but maybe because I’m the one wielding the spatula.

The moment of the flip should give another sign of that elusive perfection. Diana Beebe, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, MDDW, Diana Beebe's Blog, science fiction, fantasyPancakes with crop circles rings!

This is when my dad pounds his pancakes into flat, pseudo-crepes in his search for perfection. 😀

The evidence is clear, the perfect pancake is elusive and possibly non-existent.
