Zonkeys, Zorses, and other Zebroids

Diana Beebe's Blog, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, Diana Beebe, science fiction, middle grade fantasy, fantasyA baby zonkey was born at Reynosa Zoo in Mexico on April 21 (the link has a news video). It’s the cutest thing! Don’t you love its stripey legs?

Another zonkey was born in Italy last July with more stripes.

What’s a zonkey? Glad you asked!

It’s parents are a zebra and a donkey. That makes it a zebroid—a hybrid from a zebra and anything equine. Technically, this new little guy is a donkra, because the mother is a zebra and the father is a donkey (not the other way around), But the news called him a zonkey, and this is the Letter Z. Also, zebroid is an awesome word.

Diana Beebe's Blog, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, Diana Beebe, science fiction, middle grade fantasy, fantasyI love the way portmanteau words are used to describe some of the possible zebroids. Here a a few:

  • Zorse
  • Zony
  • Zedonk
  • Zebonkey
  • Zebadonk
  • Zule

In Hunter Moon, Marce has a black and white war horse. After seeing these zebroids, I had to give the horse stripey legs.

That, my friends, is the last post in the 2014 A to Z Blogging Challenge! What’s next for me? What’s next for you?

What do you think about zebroids? Have you heard of zonkeys before? Have you ever seen one in person (that would be cool)?
