W is for Wonderful Warrior Women

Diana Beebe's Blog, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, Diana Beebe, science fiction, middle grade fantasy, fantasyA world of warrior women inspired the city-state of Kymora in my fantasy Hunter Moon. The Greek mythology about the Amazons often gets a simple description about fierce, matriarchal soldiers with only war on their minds. Here’s another description.

They maintained their population by having children with war captives or with high status officers with whom they made, er, special arrangements. People have speculated for, well, forever, whether they were real or not. This recent Smithsonian article includes an archeological find that I found fascinating and inspiring, after the brief discussion of Wonder Woman. 😀 (I was going to be Wonder Woman and fly that invisible jet and use the lasso of truth and use my powers for good…)

Wait, let’s back up. I mean, back up to when I got the real inspiration for Hunter Moon, not all the way back in time to ancient Greece.

Diana Beebe's Blog, Mermaids Don't Do Windows, Diana Beebe, science fiction, middle grade fantasy, fantasyAlmost a million years ago, when I was an English teacher, I wrote in my spare time and bled on the page. One of my co-workers joked that dating men would be easier if she could rent and return them like movies at Blockbluster. The idea took root in my head like a little seed and grew and changed. I wrote a short story, but it wasn’t enough.

The characters grew and became chatty, especially Marce and sometimes Kevan. The story grew darker and richer, and life stuff happened to me. I stopped writing for awhile.

Marce is a warrior (whether she likes it or not), and she wouldn’t give up. She told me her story—all the time. Then she sent Kevan to talk, too, to tell me his side of the story.

The relentless warrior that she is returned me to writing—over a decade after that first inspiration. This warrior woman in my head taught me how to fight for my dreams, how to be a warrior, how to bleed on the page again.

I’ve put Marce’s tale down a few times to let her story mature, just as I have as a writer. It’s not the story I started, but life wouldn’t have it any other way.

Do you think the Amazon myth is based in fact? What dreams have you fought for?
