4 Things That Shouldn’t Be in Drivers’ Hands

The other day, I posted about 7 things to do that leads to happier drivers.

Side note: I feel a little guilty for picking on those drivers who couldn’t afford the blinker option… One of ours just had to be replaced. Dang. Those are expensive.

One of the comments mentioned cell phones, and I realized that drivers with stuff in their hands are a brand new topic! Here are my top 4 things that shouldn’t be in drivers’ hands (I’ve actually seen people do these things):

4. Food. I’ve seen some interesting meals being eaten by drivers:

  • A HUGE burrito. The guy was really into it, too. I imagined he was saying, “Oh, this…is the best…burrito…eeevverrrr,” with a mouthful of whatever it was inside. Maybe he was washing his face with it.
  • A bowl of cereal with a spoon. Take a minute to think about that one…  Yeah.
  • Coffee mugs. Hot coffee in an open container in a moving vehicle?

3. Reading materials.

  • That book was so good, one driver couldn’t put it down. The book rested against the steering wheel with the driver’s thumbs keeping it in place. I love books, too, but not enough to challenge my driving skills.
  • Maps. Remember when we had to use Mapsco map books or paper maps? Evidently, some people still use them.

2. Make up

Mascara. On my way to work, I watched a woman put on mascara. In rush hour traffic. Driving. She didn’t even wait to be stopped at the red lights. She was holding a small plastic stick in front of her eyeball… No sudden stops, please.

  • Liquid foundation. If you don’t have time to take five minutes to apply your makeup at home, then don’t risk other lives because you want to look good.

1. Cell phones. The world changed when cell phones became common place. There’s not much funny to say about using cell phones while driving for:Diana Beebe's Blog, Diana Beebe, science fiction, middle grade fantasy, fantasy, Mermaids Don't Do Windows

  • Texting. Should never happen.
  • Phone calls. Probably can wait. Remember the days when we couldn’t make a phone call unless a phone was plugged into a phone jack in a wall? We did just fine in the car without a phone. (OK. So, ignorance was bliss.)
  • Navigation. I have a phone holder in my car, so I can look at the navigation system on my phone. (Yeah, my car doesn’t have navigation.) Amazon lists a huge variety of phone holders.

Someone please tell me why some drivers put their phones on speaker and hold the phone in front of them to talk?

What crazy things have you seen drivers do to “multitask” while traveling?
